Union (3-3, 1-1 Liberty League) carried the better of the play and the possession in the first half, outshooting Bard 9-2. It was on the second of consecutive corner kicks when a shot was blocked by the hand of a Bard defender, giving Bickford the opportunity to beat freshman keeper
Lily Harris (Charlotte, VT) on a PK, and she did.
In the second half play was more even, and it resulted in a couple of good chances for both teams. Five minutes into the second half, sophomore
Margot Kalach Hanono beat Union keeper Allison Brustowicz (Newton, MA) to a cross from
Sylvia Kool, but Brustowicz immediately smothered the shot right off Hanono's foot.
On the other end, Bard's other freshman keeper,
Kelsey O'Brien, made two stellar diving saves in the 67th and 72nd minute, respectively, to keep the game close.
In the 75th minute, Kool struck a shot that just went high over the crossbar, and that turned out to be Bard's last, best chance to score.
Brustowicz made three saves for Union, all in the second half.
Harris made six saves and O'Brien made four for the Raptors, who are off until next Friday, when they host Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League game at 4 p.m.
