RECAP: Women’s Soccer Bested by Union

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's soccer team dropped a mid-week match to the Union Garnet Chargers 0-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Ferrari Field.

Three minutes in, Nikki Magnozzi made a run into the Union defensive third, and Mahlia Slaiby had a cross get broken up. Midway through the half, Union had a great cross that found no feet, and Bard used some emergency defending to stay alive. Shortly after, the Garnet Chargers scored off a corner and the ensuing loose ball. With 5:51 remaining, Union added another, as it created open space to work with a numbers advantage. Overall, the Garnet Chargers had a 67% to 33% possession advantage.

In the second half, Union continued to double team the Raptors, making them uncomfortable. Anytime Bard had possession and tried to move forward, the Garnet Chargers smothered them due to its set defensive shape. At the 61:19 mark, Union got a shot off from the left side of the box, and Julianna LaFond swept it up on the short hop. Addison Varley found an opportunity to shoot at the 67:25 mark, but it sailed wide left. The Raptors forced the Garnet Chargers out wide for most of the half, preventing valuable scoring opportunities. With under ten minutes remaining, Bard drew a foul to bring up a free kick, which Mahlia Slaiby took and forced a tough save in the right corner of the net.

Thayden Hamilton-Howard had seven first-half saves, and Julianna LaFond recorded five second-half saves. Camila Sandaal, Kaia Brady, Alexandria Loner, Carmen Merrick, and Goldie Siff all played the full 90 minutes.

Bard travels to Canton, N.Y. to play St. Lawrence on Saturday at noon.
