Huggins' hat trick spurs Bard romp

Junior Maddy Huggins trots back to midfield after scoring one of her three goals in the first half of Wednesday night's game against Sage. Bard won, 8-1.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Maddy Huggins looks like a different player out there.

After a stellar freshman season in 2010, Huggins struggled last fall. She seems to have returned to her old form - or perhaps even better than her old form.

Huggins scored three straight goals in the first 12:30 of the game and Bard went on to defeat Sage, 8-1, in a non-league game on Wednesday night. Through two games, Huggins has four goals and two assists.

Box score

It all happened pretty quickly. In the second minute, freshman Sylvia Kool (Clifton Park, NY) hit a solid cross to Huggins in the box, and it was 1-0. Later, Huggins scored a pair of goals less than two minutes apart, and it was 3-0 before Sage had even registered a shot.

In the end, Huggins had three goals and an assist; junior Brianna Bean had two goals and an assist; single goals were scored by Megan Snyder, Alana Shaw and Joanna Regan, and single assists were registered by Sylvia Estes, Abbey Labrecque and Mady Calhoun.

Four different Bard goalkeepers played, but none made any saves. The Raptors (2-0) outshot Sage, 24-1, with that one a cross from Sage freshman Nicole Maher (Glen Cove, NY) that slipped through the fingers of freshman keeper Ryan O'Connell and just over the goal line.

The schedule gets tougher this weekend. Bard will participate in the SUNY Cortland Tournament on Saturday and Sunday. Bard will play Medaille College (1-2) on Saturday at 3:30, then take on host SUNY Cortland (1-0-1) on Sunday at 3:30. SUNY Cortland fell out of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Top 25 over the weekend, but the Red Dragons are still in the "Also Receiving Votes" category.
