ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College women's soccer team made history on Pride Night versus RPI on Wednesday, defeating the Engineers for the first time in 17 appearances, 2-1. It was the first Liberty League win since Oct 7, 2017, when Bard snuck by Ithaca 1-0.

RPI opened the action with a near-miss at 6:08, hitting the right post on a shot that fell harmlessly out of bounds. Bard generated a few chances of its own, with Mahlia Slaiby drawing a foul in the 9th minute, allowing the Raptors to attack in RPI's half. Thayden Hamilton-Howard couldn't stop a high-velocity shot from the Engineers at the 19:50 mark that gave RPI the lead. Brooke Egrestis had a glancing header on target in the 27th minute, but it was scooped up. Bard retained possession afterward, and off a throw-in on the left side, Alexandria Loner retrieved the ball inside the box, flicked it to Slaiby, who forced the goalkeeper out of position with a shot. Nikki Magnozzi crashed towards the net, getting her foot on the ball past the goalkeeper to tie the game at 1-1. Hamilton-Howard picked up two saves afterward to keep the score even at halftime.

In the second half, the Raptors continued to create opportunities, and they broke through off another deep throw in. This time, at the 56:54 mark, Kaia Brady tossed to Slaiby, who gathered and launched a scorching game-winner to the back of the net. The celebration couldn't start early, and the Raptors buckled down and defended for over 30 minutes to keep the game from being tied. Julianna LaFond racked up save after save on attempts by RPI. Camila Sandaal made key plays down the stretch, including a great run from the Raptors' defensive third that gave Bard breathing room. In the 68th minute, LaFond made a spectacular stop, leaping with her right arm extended to block a shot from RPI's Isabelle Gelzhiser. A scramble in the final minutes led to a slew of shots from RPI, but Bard escaped from its own end after LaFond saved the final attempt at 89:31.

Hamilton-Howard was effective, posting seven saves, and LaFond finished with eight. Sandaal, Brady, and Goldie Siff each played the full 90 minutes.

The season finale is Saturday at 2 p.m. against Ithaca.
