Although there wasn't a big disparity in shots on goal (9-8 for New Paltz), the Hawks had the advantage in possession for most of the afternoon. Still, Bard had a couple of chances to score late and could not get one behind sophomore goalkeeper Stephanie Vega (Oceanside, NY).
Late in the first half, a long, high cross into the box appeared like it was going to get over the head of Bard keeper
Amy Strawbridge, and a Bard player used her hand to stop it from going behind both she and Strawbridge. That resulted in a penalty kick opportunity to New Paltz junior Shelby Kondelka (Bloomingburg, NY).
Although Strawbridge guessed right, Kondelka's low kick tucked just inside the far post, and New Paltz (4-2-1) led 1-0 in the 44th minute.
There weren't too many great opportunities to score for either team in the second half, but eventually the Raptors had to start pushing forward to try to tie the match. The push resulted in a couple of good scoring opportunities for Bard.
In the 77th minute,
Cosie Andujar got free after a nice pass from
Alana Shaw, but her quick shot glanced off the outside of the near post. A minute later, Shaw produced a shot from in close that was stopped easily by Vega.
With Bard still pushing forward, a long pass from junior Beth Bowling (Islip, NY) found junior Stephanie Martinez (Deer Park, NY) right in front of the Bard goal, and she scored with just over one minute to go in the game to make it 2-0.
Up next for Bard (2-4) is a home game against SUNY Purchase on Tuesday night at 7.
