Bard loses finale to SUNY New Paltz

Bard's lone senior, Hannah Becker, receives gifts and praise from coach Sarah Berheide before Thursday night's game against SUNY New Paltz. Members of Becker's family were there to enjoy Senior Night festivities.
Box Score ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Based on results against common opponents, Thursday night's women's lacrosse game between SUNY New Paltz and Bard wasn't going to be close.

That assumption was only half right.

Bard was stubborn on Senior Night, rallying  from a  5-0 deficit to make it 6-3 with 2:28 left in the first half, and it was 7-3 at halftime.

But SUNY New Paltz came out fired up in the second half and ran away with a 19-5 victory, as Bard ended its second season of women's lacrosse with a 3-9 record.

SUNY New Paltz (7-7 overall) scored twice in the first five minutes of the game and led 6-1 with 12:29 left in the first half. But back-to-back goals by sophomore Bridget Reddington and freshman Victoria Fleisher made it 6-3, and even though junior attack Samantha DelGaudio (Northport, N.Y.) scored in the waning seconds of the half, Bard came away feeling that 7-3 was a great result at halftime.

The Hawks got an earful from coach Heather Semelmacher at halftime and came out with guns blazing in the second half. They scored four goals in the first four minutes - including two more from DelGaudio - and it was 13-3 before eight minutes were complete in the second half.

DelGaudio finished with six goals and an assist for SUNY New Paltz, which still has three league games left in the State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC). The Hawks don't have a league win this season so far.

Bard got two goals from junior Farah Akhtar and single goals from Reddington, Fleisher and freshman Stephanie LaMont.

Senior Hannah Becker, playing in her final game, made 10 saves.
