ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - A couple of newcomers on the Bard College men's tennis team played key roles in Saturday's come-from-behind, 5-4 victory over Brooklyn College.
Bard lost two of the three doubles matches, then lost at No. 4 and No. 6 singles to fall behind, 4-1, with four singles matches still in progress.
First, junior
Joel Richmond (New Hartford, N.Y.) defeated senior Vesna Tan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 6-3, 6-3, to cut Brooklyn's lead to 4-2.
Then, freshman Adam Skinner (San Diego, Calif.), playing his first collegiate match at No. 1 singles, rallied to stop Brooklyn sophomore Anthony Chan (Flushing, N.Y.), 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. That cut the Bulldogs' lead to 4-3.
At No. 2 singles, sophomore
Erik Wallulis (Portland, Ore.) held off sophomore Matthew Micharlsen (Garden City, N.Y.) 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, and the match was tied, 4-4. Meanwhile, the match at No. 5 singles had gone into a third set.
Bard freshman
Jakob Friedman (Manhattan, N.Y.) pulled out a victory over senior Qing Tan (Brooklyn, N.Y.) 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 - with most of the final set being watched closely by all of the players and coaches from both teams - and Bard had a 5-4 victory.
The Raptors are 2-2 overall; Brooklyn College is 0-7 overall. Bard's next match is on Tuesday at home at 6 p.m. against Western Connecticut State University.
