Tennis teams provide clinic for Cub Scouts

Bard College tennis player Amanda Gan explains the rules of an agility exercise for members of Cub Scout Pack 28 last week.
The Bard College men's and women's tennis teams recently hosted Cub Scout Pack 28 from Rhinebeck, N.Y.

The clinic gave the scouts the opportunity to earn 'belt loops' in tennis, according to Den Master Kevin Smith.

As part of the Cub Scouts Academic and Sports program, scouts can earn belt loops or pins in numerous academic and sports categories. There are currently 28 sports activities that qualify, and 25 academic areas. All of the 50 or so Cub Scouts who participated in the event on Oct. 21 received belt loops for tennis.

"The whole event was very well put-together and we're so appreciative of the Bard athletic department," Smith said. "The feedback we've gotten from the kids and their parents has been terrific. If we had a chance to do it again, we definitely would."

Members of the Bard tennis teams, like Kevin McDonald, Alexandre Khondji, Amanda Gan, Julia DeFabo and Nelle Plotkin participated. The scouts were split up into groups and worked on the six different tennis courts on a variety of tennis-related activities and agility drills.

"My son and his friend couldn't stop talking about it all the way home," Smith said. "And they all love tennis now."
