Bard advances to Skyline semifinals

Freshman Maddy Huggins, center, goes up for a header during the quarterfinal game against Sage.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - In a tense playoff game that was scoreless for more than 83 minutes, it took a nearly perfect play to score the game-winning goal.

And Bard got it.

Junior Erin Hannigan (West Pittston, PA) scored in the 84th minute to lift Bard to a 1-0 win over Sage in the Skyline Conference quarterfinals on Saturday. The Raptors will next play No. 2 seed Farmingdale State on the road on Tuesday in the semifinals.

Bard held an edge in possession throughout the game, but the Raptors really began to turn up the pressure as the second half progressed. Sophomore Amelia Bronder-Giroux (Malden, MA), who had just entered the game, chipped a high pass from the corner toward the penalty area. There, freshman Maddy Huggins (Mukilteo, WA) used the back of her head to make a blind pass behind her into the box, where Hannigan ran onto the ball unmarked and beat Sage senior goalie Brittany McDonald (Schenectady, NY) for the game's only goal.

McDonald was called on to make eight saves in the game; Bard freshman Amy Strawbridge (Indianapolis, IN) made three.

The last  time Bard went to Farmingdale State, the result was a 4-0 loss. That was on Sept. 18.
