RECAP: Baseball falls in doubleheader at Union

The Bard College baseball team could not withstand Union, as the Raptors dropped the doubleheader 15-11 in Game 1 and 1-11 in Game 2 on Saturday afternoon at Central Park "A".

Charles Lehr started on the mound in Game 1 and had three strikeouts, while Aidan Kiefer and Jackson Sprinzen came in as relief. Kiefer had two strikeouts while Sprinzen had one. Sprinzen then got the start for Game 2 and threw 1.1 innings, before Graham Benway came in to throw 2.1 innings and had three strikeouts. Elise Berger went 2.1 innings as well, notching two Ks. Henry Hubner and Orlando Shin were the final Bard relievers.

Game 1: Union 15, Bard 11

In a back-and-forth, offense-heavy game, Bard and Union combined for 26 runs and 35 hits. Bard wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the first. Jack Leandri singled, stole second, and eventually came around to score on a throwing error following a fielder's choice to give the Raptors a 1–0 lead.

Union answered immediately in the bottom half as Union surged ahead 4–1 after one. After a quiet second inning, Bard chipped away in the third. Burcell and Webb singled, and Fryer delivered an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4–2. The Garnet Chargers responded again in the bottom half, stringing together doubles and singles, to plate three runs and extend the lead to 7–2.

The Raptors showed resilience in the fourth. A hit-by-pitch and a single set the stage before Rudd lined a two-run single down the first base line. An error moments later allowed another run to score, pulling Bard within 7–5. Union, however, answered with two more runs in the bottom of the inning, to make it 9–5.

Bard kept fighting in the fifth, scoring on a Hall sacrifice bunt to bring it to 9–6. Union again had a response to push the margin to 11–6.

In the sixth, Bard loaded the bases and forced in a run when Rivlin was hit by a pitch, trimming the score to 11–7. But Union added two more in the bottom half, stretching the lead to 13–7.

The Raptors refused to go away in the seventh. After two reached, Burcell delivered a clutch two-run double to left, cutting the deficit to 13–9. Union countered once again in the bottom half to make it 15–9.

Bard made one final push in the eighth. Anna, Rivlin, and Hall loaded the bases before Leandri was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Rudd then lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home another, closing the gap to 15–11.

That would be as close as the Raptors would get. Union's bullpen held Bard scoreless in the ninth, securing the 15–11 final.

Game 2: Union 11, Bard 1

In a game that featured one decisive inning, Bard fell to Union 11-1 despite scattering hits across multiple frames. Bard threatened early, as in the top of the first, Burcell singled and Rivlin worked a two-out walk. Unfortunately, the Raptors were unable to capitalize.

After Bard left a runner at third in the second, the Garnet Chargers plated two unearned runs. Union delivered the big rally in the fourth, as it strung together hits to score six runs, making it 8-0. The Garnet Chargers added on, leading 9-0 in the fifth, continuing to convert opportunities with runners in scoring position.

The Raptors finally broke through in the sixth. Leandri singled and Rudd followed with a double to put runners on second and third. Burcell brough home Leandri with a groundout, cutting the deficit to 9-1.

Union answered immediately in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 10-1, and Bard was unable to generate further offense over the final innings despite a handful of baserunners. The Garnet Chargers secured the 11-1 final after another insurance run in the eighth.
