ITHACA, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team defeated Ithaca College, 9-8, in a Liberty League game on Friday afternoon.
Down 7-1 after two innings, the Raptors chipped away, tied the game at 7-7 in the seventh, went ahead with two runs in the eighth and hung on, catching the final out with the game-tying run on third base.
Evan Matthews got the win with five shutout innings of relief, and
Bryant Elliott picked up his second save.
"Evan was really good," Salvatore said. "And the older guys played really well and did a good job on the bases, creating a lot of pressure out there."
Spencer Checkoway and
Jared Toby had two hits apiece, and
Robert Arciola went 1-for-1 with two walks, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Bard stole nine bases on 10 attempts to improve to 75-of-83 on the season.
"It was a good team win and we've got to go do it again tomorrow," Salvatore said.
The three-game series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday. Like Friday's game, the twinbill will be played on the turf at Cornell University's Hoy Stadium.
