Bard bats get going in Game 2; Raptors split with RPI

TROY, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, losing Game 1, 16-1, and winning the nightcap, 9-5.

After being held to three hits in the first game, and to no runs over the first three innings of Game 2, Bard came alive with five runs in the fourth and four in the fifth. The big hit in the fourth was a three-run double by first year Jack Williamson, and the big hit in the fifth was a two-run home run by Justin Fiume.

"It was a good team win," Bard coach Andy Salvatore said. "We needed to respond about a letdown in Game 1, and we did that."

In Game 2, Fiume went 3-for-4 with a double, home run and three RBI. Jordan Myers and Jared Toby each added two hits. Spencer Checkoway got the win, and Bryant Elliott pitched the final three innings to give Bard the split.

"RPI is a good team and we need to execute on Sunday," Salvatore said.

Game 3 of the series will be played at Honey Field on Sunday at 1.
