ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College baseball team defeated Middlebury College, 6-4, in a non-league game on Tuesday afternoon.
The Raptors jumped out to a 6-0 lead, then used solid pitching and great defense to keep the powerful Middlebury offense from breaking through. The Raptors turned double plays to end rallies in the top of the sixth and the top of the eighth, and
Murphy Foss struck out the side to close it out in the ninth.
"We were fortunate to execute well enough to beat a good team," Bard coach
Andy Salvatore said. "The pitchers kept us in it, we limited the amount of free bases they got, and we played good defense."
Spencer Checkoway got the start and gave up two runs over four innings; he also went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Alex Luscher doubled and drove in a pair of runs, while
Jordan Myers,
Justin Fiume and
Michael Hannan had two hits apiece.
Jake Stacey started a pair of key double plays from third base, and he also threw a runner out at home on a fielder's choice.
Bard will make a short trip to Pennsylvania next, playing Nichols College on Friday and Saturday at Messiah. The Raptors will return home Sunday for a single game against Mount St. Mary at 2.
