Wardell plays hero as Raptors edge Purchase, 5-4

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Bard sophomore MacKenzie Wardell won a third set tiebreaker at No. 3 single to give the Bard College women's tennis team a 5-4 win over Purchase in the fall finale on Saturday.

Bard held a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the event. Katie Esposito and Isabelle Scarborough cruised, 8-1, at No. 1, while Amelia Tiemann and Wardell won, 8-4, at No. 2.

In singles, Esposito and Tiemann won at No. 1 & 2, respectively, but Purchase (6-6) won at 4, 5 and 6. That left it up to Wardell, who was locked in a battle with Purchase junior Abigail Cuddy (Mount Kisco, NY) at No. 3. Wardell won the first set, 6-1, and Cuddy won the second set, 6-1.

Wardell pulled it out, 7-6, in the third set, winning the tiebreaker, 7-2.

The match wrapped up the fall portion of the 2017-18 season for Bard (3-7). The Raptors' next match is on March 31.
