ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Bard College women's tennis team defeated Elmira College and lost to Rochester Institute of Technology at the Elmira Tournament on Saturday.
At 3-1, Bard has already surpassed last year's win total (2).
In the morning, Bard edged Elmira, 5-4. The hosts won at No. 1 doubles and Nos. 1-3 singles, so the Raptors needed to win everything else, and they did.
Amelia Tiemann and
MacKenzie Wardell won at No. 2 doubles, while
Lily Zacharias and
Isabelle Scarborough won at No. 3 doubles.
Bard won the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles to pull out the victory. Zacharias (4), Wardell (5) and newcomer
Eva Grunblatt (6) each won in straight sets.
In the afternoon, Bard lost to RIT, 6-3. Although RIT is in the Liberty League, the match that counts in the league standings will take place in the spring. The Tigers (2-0) won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches.
For Bard, Zacharias and
Bella Martinez won at No. 3 singles, and Martinez won a super tiebreaker to win No. 4 singles. Wardell scored Bard's other point with a straight-set win at No. 6 singles. The result matched Bard's high point total against any Liberty League team - 3 - set in 2011-12 in a loss to Union.
