ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team banged out 15 hits and 10 runs in the second game of a doubleheader to earn a split with St. Lawrence University in Liberty League games played on Saturday afternoon.
St. Lawrence won the first game, 2-0, and Bard prevailed in Game 2, 10-3.
Sam Downes (Shelburne Falls, MA) pitched a seven-inning two hitter in Game 1, striking out five and walking three. Michael LeFevre (Pleasant Valley, NY) provided all the runs St. Lawrence would need with a two-run homer down the left field line in the bottom of the fifth.
Steve Marotta (1-4) was the hard-luck loser, giving up two runs on eight hits over six innings.
In Game 2, a six-run top of the eighth broke open a close game and led Bard to victory. The Raptors were up, 4-3, when
Rory Maglich singled to start the eighth, and back-to-back bunt singles by
David Schlosser and
Matt Lasky loaded the bases with no outs.
After a pitching change and a strikeout,
JP Fisher drove in a run with an infield single, and
Alec Montecalvo made it 6-3 with a single to center. An error on a fielder's choice made it 7-3; a sacrifice fly by
Preston Gittelson made it 8-3; and a two-out double by
Jack Hawke made it 10-3.
Zach Hayes improved to 2-1, yielding three earned runs over six innings;
Alex Bunnell and
Frank Ortega mopped up. Schlosser went 4-for-5 with a walk, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Adam Carafotes drove in three runs. Maglich, Lasky, Montecalvo and Hawke had two hits apiece.
Bard is 7-14 overall and 2-4 in the Liberty League. St. Lawrence is 4-12, 4-6.
