Raptors, Saints swap blowouts, split series

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – It wasn't a typical doubleheader split.

The baseball teams from St. Lawrence University and Bard College took turns pummelling each other on Sunday, the Saints winning Game One, 15-0, and Bard taking the nightcap, 22-6. They split the four-game series.

Dan Hedden (West Cornwall, CT) gave up just three hits in Game One - all in the the third inning - and the Saints led, 8-0, after three innings. Bard ended up stranding 11 runners and committed three errors, leading to four unearned runs. It wasn't pretty.

Game Two wasn't pretty, either, but this time it was St. Lawrence. All nine Bard starters had a hit, and the Saints committed five errors and gave up nine unearned runs.

It was just 1-0 in the fourth inning when it all came apart for the Saints (6-13, 5-7 Liberty League). Bard scored four in the fourth, four in the fifth and four in the sixth, and it was 13-2. Key hits along the way included RBI singles by Preston Gittelson, David Schlosser, JP Fisher, Alec Montecalvo and Quinn McInerney, and an RBI double by Nikolai Grumet. A two-run double by Montecalvo keyed a nine-run eighth, and it was 22-3.

Alex Bunnell (3-0) got the win with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. Montecalvo and Gittelson each went 3-for-5 with four RBI; Schlosser, Carafotes, Fisher and McInerney had two hits apiece. It was the most runs Bard had produced in a game since baseball returned to Bard in 2013.

There are five home games on the schedule for the Raptors this week, beginning with a single non-league game against New Paltz on Tuesday. Follow it via Live Stats or Live Video right here.
