KINGSTON, N.Y. - By the time the Bard College women's lacrosse team had figured out what it needed to do to beat Richard Stockton College, it was too late.
The visitors from New Jersey built a 7-0 halftime lead, then held off a furious Bard rally to defeat the Raptors, 9-5, in a non-league game on Saturday night.
It started as a defensive struggle. One goal was scored in the first 10 minutes of the game - by Richard Stockton's Colleen Knight (Pennsauken, NJ) Â - and it stayed 1-0 for another 10 minutes. But the Ospreys (5-1) scored six times in the last 10 minutes of the first half, and it was 7-0 at halftime.
Richard Stockton outshot Bard, 14-5, in the first half and the way things were going, a shutout looked possible.
The Raptors were a different team in the second half.
Joanna Regan scored in the first minute, then after Nicole Miller (Southampton, NJ) pushed Stockton's lead to 8-1, Bard scored four unanswered goals to make it an 8-5 game with 4:31 to go.
The dagger came on the next draw, when Carlie Flake (Tabernacle, NJ) caught it and took off for the Bard goal, scoring on a fast break just 17 seconds after Bard had cut the lead to three.
Knight, Miller and Flake scored two goals apiece for the Ospreys. Mary Stornes (Galloway, NJ) made six saves.
Regan had three goals,
Stephanie LaMont had a goal and an assist, and
Brianna Bean also scored for Bard, 2-1.
Winta Mehari made eight saves, including several big stops in the second half to keep it close.
Bard is on Spring Break this coming week. The women's lacrosse team will play at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pa., on Monday, then at SUNYIT in Utica on Wednesday. Liberty League play will begin next weekend, with RPI on Friday and Skidmore on Saturday.
