PATCHOGUE, N.Y. -
Joanna Regan scored 39 seconds into the game and finished with five goals and two assists to lead the Bard College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 12-8 victory over Old Westbury on Saturday night.
The game was tied at 1, 2 and 3 through the first 12 minutes, but Bard pushed ahead to take a 7-4 lead with just under four minutes left in the half. Old Westbury (1-4) scored twice in the last 2:28, however, to make it a slender 7-6 lead for Bard at halftime.
The Raptors tightened up in the second half, and after yielding 14 first-half shots, held the Panthers to eight in the last 30 minutes. Also, Bard scored the first three goals of the second half -
Brianna Bean,
Stephanie LaMont and Regan - to take a commanding 10-6 lead with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
Shots and turnovers were just about even, but Bard had an edge in ground balls (29-22).Â
Senior Jessica Walker (Franklin Square, NY) and sophomore Courtney Gallagher (Rockaway, NY) had two goals apiece for the home team.
For Bard, other than Regan,
Stephanie LaMont and
Brianna Bean had three goals and an assist each;
Alexandra Clarke scored her first college goal, and
Victoria Fleisher had an assist.
Winta Mehari and
Clara Sekowski split the goaltending duties. Mehari made three saves, and Sekowski made one.
Up next for Bard: a non-league game against Sage on the road on Tuesday night at 7. The game is being played at Union College.
