Skidmore fends off scrappy Bard, 62-50

Bianka Bell had her second 20-plus scoring game of the weekend on Saturday.
Box Score
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Tytravia Riley was the Liberty League Co-Rookie of the Year last season, and has been in the top three in the league in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage and steals this year.

She's Bard's star.

But she sat with an injury on Saturday, and the Raptors responded to the call with a gritty effort against Skidmore, eventually falling, 62-50 after throwing everything they had at the Thoroughbreds.

Bard was down nine in the first half and it looked like the game was headed in the direction of the 64-49 Skidmore win over the Raptors back on Jan. 31. Led by sophomore Bianka Bell, Bard responded and trailed just 25-21 at halftime.

Bell had 13 points at the break and Skidmore had a 27-18 rebounding edge without Riley in there.

Skidmore put together a 15-4 run to start the second half, and Bard was down 16 with 10:30 left in the game. The Raptors came back again led by a couple of threes from Bell, and it was 49-41 with 4:51 to go.

An 8-0 run from Skidmore finally put the game away. The Thoroughbreds shot 53 percent in the second half and finished with a 45-34 rebounding advantagge.

Junior Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) led Skidmore with 12 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks. Senior Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, MO) added 12 points, five rebounds and six assists. The Thoroughbreds are 10-13 overall, 5-9 in the Liberty League.

Bard (1-22, 0-14) got 21 points, eight rebounds, three assists and a block from Bell, and 13 points and eight rebounds from Liz Freud. Senior Treyonna Frazier, who was playing in her last home game, had four points and two rebounds.

Bard will wrap up the 2013-14 season next weekend at Clarkson (Friday) and St. Lawrence (Saturday). Follow both games live right here.
