ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Bard sophomore
Bianka Bell had the game of her young college career, but it wasn't enough as the Raptors lost to Union College, 68-54, in a Liberty League game on Friday night.
Both teams shot 46 percent from the field in the first half, but Bard made 5-of-10 three-pointers, including 3-of-5 from Bell, and led at the half, 35-31.
It's only the second conference game Bard has led at the half since the Raptors joined the Liberty League in 2011-12. The other was last year's lone conference win at Clarkson.
With sophomore star
Tytravia Riley on the bench with injury concerns to start the second half, Union went on a 9-0 run to grab the lead. Bard hung in there without Riley, and when she returned with 11:06 left in the game, Bard was down, 42-41.
But Union made eight consecutive foul shots on its next four possessions to make it 50-41, and although Bard trimmed the lead to three with five minutes left, it never got closer and the Dutchwomen won going away.
The difference was Union's performance at the foul line: 15-for-17 in the second half, and 21-for-24 for the game.
Sophomore Cailin Schmeer (Ambler, PA) scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the second half to lead the winners. Senior Amy Loya (Bethel, CT) added 12 points and six rebounds, Kate Thompson (Clinton, NY) added 11 points, and freshman Natalie Leone (Ashland, MA) chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Union is 14-7 overall, 6-6 in the Liberty League.
Bell went 6-for-11 from beyond the three-point line and scored a career-high 27 points, and added seven rebounds and two steals. Riley added 10 points and nine rebounds in 27 minutes.
Bard's final home game of the season will be played on Saturday when Skidmore comes to town. It'll be the last game in the career of senior
Treyonna Frazier.
