ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team had to work extra hard to hold SUNY Canton down on Tuesday night.

Bard got out to an 8-3 lead only to see Canton tie it early in the second half. When Bard went ahead 10-8, the Roos responded again, tying it with 23:10 left in the game.

A brilliant individual effort and goal by Victoria Fleisher kicked off a four-goal outburst over an eight-minute span, and Bard held off SUNY Canton, 16-13, for a thrilling non-league victory.

Bard junior Stephanie LaMont scored six goals, giving her 34 on the season, which broke her own school record for goals in a season (29), which she set last year.

Early on, it didn't look like it was going to be a thriller at all. With 4:46 to go in the first half, the Raptors (5-6) were up 8-3. But Canton (4-5) scored three goals in the final 3:23 of the first half, and two goals in the first 2:08 of the second half to knot the score at 8-8.

Bard coach Hannah Taylor wasn't happy and used a time out to make sure her team knew it. The Raptors responded with goals from LaMont and Fleisher to make it 10-8, but Canton's Brooke Knight (Madrid, NY) and Devyn Hutcheson (Oswego, NY) tied it up, and it was 10-10 with plenty of time left (23:10).

Fleisher drew some oohs and aahs with an unassisted goal a couple of minutes later, and that seemed to spark the Raptors, who scored three more times over the next seven minutes or so to take a 14-10 lead. The Roos didn't get to within three goals of tying it after that point.

LaMont finished with six goals and an assist; Fleisher had four goals and an assist; Joanna Regan had three goals and three assists; and freshman Mary-Elizabeth Clair had three goals and two assists. Maddy Huggins made eight saves.

Up next for Bard is the first-place team in the Liberty League, RPI, in Troy on Friday at 4.
