Box Score AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Bard College baseball team opened its Spring Trip to Florida with a 16-1 loss to unbeaten MIT on Sunday.
The Engineers (7-0) scored eight runs in the sixth and the game was shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule.
It didn't start out badly at all. Bard freshman
Ryan Conklin got the start and held MIT to just two hits and an unearned run over three innings. In the decisive fourth inning, however, the Raptors committed three errors as MIT batted around and built its lead to 6-0.
Bard (2-3) got a run back in the fifth when
Andres Medina doubled and scored on a triple by
Tom Danz. But five errors and 10 walks were far too much to overcome against a well-established program like MIT.
"Ryan pitched very well," Bard assistant coach
Andy Salvatore said. "We just didn't play defense behind him. We're still experiencing some growing pains."
Medina and Danz finished with two hits apiece for Bard. Sophomore DH Phil Reiser (Alpharetta, GA) had three of MITs 11 hits and drove in two runs.
Up next for Bard is a doubleheader on Monday with Crown College of Minnesota. Crown is 0-4 and hasn't played a game since Mar. 14.
