BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Bard College women's basketball team opened the 2013-14 season with a 69-47 loss to Nazareth at the Brockport Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night.
The Raptors (0-1) never led, were down 15 at the half and didn't get closer than 13 in the second half. Turnovers were a problem, with Bard committing 15 in the first half and 26 in the game. The Golden Flyers (1-0) scored 24 points off of Bard turnovers.
Bard shot 42 percent from the floor in the first half but trailed 35-20 at the break. Nazareth had a 20-14 edge in rebounds through 20 minutes and took 14 more shots.
The second half was played more evenly, with Nazareth outscoring Bard by seven points, but the result was never in doubt.
The winners were led by sophomore center Lindsay Kelly (Doylestown, PA), who had 15 points and nine rebounds in 19 minutes. Sophomore Julia Brew (Carlsbad, CA) added 14 points.
Bard got nine points apiece from
Tytravia Riley and
Liz Freud; Riley added eight rebounds and four steals, but she played just 20 minutes. Freshman
Annie Kissel had an impressive collegiate debut with eight points, five rebounds and three blocked shots.
Joanna Regan had eight points and six rebounds, and
Treyonna Frazier was effective off the bench with eight points and three rebounds.
Brockport held off Wells, 66-57, in the nightcap, so Bard will play Wells at 2 p.m. in the consolation game. That game will include a matchup of the top two rebounders in the country from last year. Wells' Ashley Roser, who had 25 points and 13 rebounds in the loss to Brockport, finished just ahead of Bard's
Tytravia Riley for the national rebounding title in the 2012-13 season.
