First-half drought dooms Raptors at William Smith

Tytravia Riley had 16 points, 14 rebounds and five steals in a loss to William Smith College on Friday night.
Box Score GENEVA, N.Y. - A nine-minute scoreless stretch in the first half put Bard in a hole, and the Raptors never climbed back out in a 64-49 loss at William Smith College in a Liberty League women's basketball game on Friday night.

Box score

The Herons (11-6 overall, 5-3 Liberty League) pushed an 11-point halftime lead to 20 early in the second half, but Bard (7-11, 1-8 Liberty League) battled back. When Liz Freud completed an old-fashioned three point play with 5:02 left in the game, the Raptors had cut the 20-point lead to nine.

The Raptors turned the ball over on consecutive possessions, however, and William Smith went on a 10-0 run to put the game away.

It was a close game early - 10-10 with 11 minutes left in the first half - and in spite of the fact that Bard's super freshman, Tytravia Riley, took a seat with two fouls before four minutes was gone in the game. But she ended up playing only nine minutes in the first half, and William Smith built its lead.

The Herons made four of their first five shots in the second half, and the lead ballooned to 20 with just 3:28 into the second half. Behind Riley and freshman Bianka Bell, the Raptors responded. Bell scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, including 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point line. Riley finished with 16 points, 14 rebounds and five steals.

The Herons got 19 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Chloe Hayter (Lititz, PA). William Smith hosts Vassar on Saturday at 2.

Bard continues its road swing tomorrow with a 2 p.m. game at Rochester Institute of Technology.
