Women's volleyball team splits pair

Senior Cara Chalk had her best hitting day of the season so far, and Bard split a pair of matches on Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College women's volleyball team split two matches on Saturday afternoon, rallying to beat SUNY Purchase, 3-1, then falling to Bay Path College, 3-0.

Set scores for Bard against SUNY Purchase were 23-25, 26-24, 25-14 and 25-17.

After dropping the first set, Bard got down 7-1, then 10-4, then 16-11 in the second set before coming to life. Seniors Cara Chalk and Ruth Lakew keyed the rally, Chalk with a couple of kills and Lakew with two aces. Chalk produced a huge kill for Bard when it was 24-24, and an error by Purchase gave Bard the second set, 26-24.

SUNY Purchase (1-6) had brief leads in both the third and fourth sets, but Bard cruised. Chalk finished with nine kills, six aces and hit .389, while Mai Aurell-Foulser produced 11 kills and 11 digs. Lakew led Bard with 14 digs in that match and Lexi Cooper had 25 assists with zero errors.

In the second match of the day, Bay Path swept Purchase, 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-19).

The Raptors had a frustrating match against Bay Path (5-2). Set scores for the winners were 25-11, 25-22 and 25-23.

The Wildcats roared out to a 25-11 win in the first set and had a 21-9 lead in the second set before Bard woke up. The Raptors scored 10 of the next 12 points to make it 23-19 and appeared poised to turn the match around, but Bay Path survived and had a two-sets-to-none lead.

Bard's momentum carried into the third set, as it jumped out to leads of 14-6 and 19-12, but Bay Path rallied. Bard led 23-19, but Bay Path scored the final six points of the match and went home with two sweeps at Bard.

Chalk had eight kills, Lakew had 15 digs and Cooper had 23 assists.

The Raptors, 3-5, open Liberty League play with a match at Vassar on Tuesday night at 7.
