Bard loses to Union in Liberty League debut

Bard senior Jessica Philpott and her teammates lost their Liberty League debut at Union on Friday.
Box Score SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Bard College women's lacrosse team built a 4-1 record so far this season by playing teams, like itself, that were relatively new to varsity status.

On Friday, Bard got a close-up look at an established Liberty League program.

Union, the runner-up in the Liberty League last spring, dominated Bard and cruised to a 14-2 victory. It was the Raptors' first-ever game in the league.

Box score

Things got away from the Raptors early, as Union (1-4 overall, 1-0 Liberty League) scored a goal a minute for the first four minutes of the game. It was 10-0 at halftime, with the Dutchwomen holding a 14-1 edge in shots.

Although Union slowed down its attack in the second half, it still finished with a 23-6 edge in shots and a 23-9 advantage in ground balls. Bard committed 18 turnovers to Union's nine.

Freshmen Ciara Dudek (Longmeadow,  MA) and Haley Gould (Prides Crossing, MA) each scored three times for the winners.

Bard (4-2 overall, 0-1 Liberty League) got a goal apiece from freshmen Joanna Regan and Reed Mango. Regan also led the team with four draw controls and four ground balls.

The Raptors face another stern league test on Saturday, when they take on William Smith College at 2 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y. The Herons topped Vassar, 17-5, on Friday.
