Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. - If the Bard College women's lacrosse team could have beaten Mount St. Mary College on Wednesday night, it would have likely clinched a Skyline Conference playoff spot in only the second year of the program.
But now the Raptors need help to get into the playoffs.
Mount St. Mary beat Bard, 11-4, to win its first Skyline Conference game of the season. The Knights remain a game behind Bard but have Sage and Maritime remaining on the schedule, two teams with two wins between them.
If Mount St. Mary can win both of those games, and Bard doesn't manage to defeat either Mount St. Vincent or Ramapo, the Knights will go to the playoffs on the strength of Wednesday night's victory.
The night didn't start well for the Raptors, who fell behind, 4-0, in the first 15 minutes. It was 6-1 at halftime, and the Knights had a 13-6 advantage in shots and appeared to be cruising to an easy win.
Bard (3-6 overall, 2-4 Skyline) fought back, though, and made a run. Freshman
Victoria Fleisher (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and junior
Kim Larie (Londonderry, N.H.) scored about four minutes apart as the middle of the second half approached, and Bard's deficit was only 6-3 with 16:09 left in the game.
Mount St. Mary (2-9, 1-5 Skyline) responded to the threat with five straight goals over the course of the next 14 minutes, and it was over. Bard freshman
Stephanie LaMont (Skippack, Pa.) scored with just under two minutes left, but it was too little, too late.
Freshman Nicole Palmieri (East Northport, N.Y.) scored four goals on five shots to lead the Knights.
For Bard, LaMont scored twice, Fleisher and Larie each scored once, and sophomore
Bridget Reddington (Caldwell, N.J.) had an assist. Senior goalie
Hannah Becker (Wayne, N.J.) made six saves.
Next up for Bard is Skyline foe Ramapo on Saturday at 1. The Roadrunners are currently 6-4 overall, 4-1 in the conference.
