BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Just like the last time these two teams played, it was a nail-biter.
The Bard College men's basketball team gave up the lead briefly in the second half, then pulled out its second win of the season over winless Skyline Conference opponent Polytechnic Institute of NYU, 75-66.
Bard jumped out to a 13-2 lead and saw the margin grow as big as 13 midway through the first half before the Fighting Blue Jays rallied to trail just 33-28 at halftime.
The bulge grew to 10 in the first few minutes of the second half, but NYU-Poly kept chipping away, and chipping away, and when sophomore Jason Samuels (Holmdel, NJ) hit a short jumper with 11:54 left in the game, the Fighting Blue Jays had their first lead of the game.
The key juncture of the game came a few minutes later after Bard had regained the lead. Junior Eric Southworth (Dutch Harbor, AK) made a jumper to cut Bard's advantage to 50-49 with 8:41 left.
Bard junior
Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA) scored six consecutive points with old-fashioned three-point plays on consecutive possessions, pushing Bard's lead to seven with 7:33 to go, and NYU-Poly didn't get closer than five the rest of the way.
Shubert finished with 25 points. Junior
Yonah Greenstein (Rego Park, NY) added 13, and senior
Christian Marghella added 12 points and eight rebounds. Bard is 2-20 overall, 2-15 in the Skyline Conference.
NYU-Poly (0-23, 0-19 Skyline) got 23 points and 10 rebounds from senior Jason Buckner (Littleton, CO).
Bard is back on the road Wednesday for a Skyline clash with Sage at 8 p.m.
