ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Once again, Bard played well at home.
But once again, it wasn't enough.
Mount St. Vincent eliminated a four-point halftime deficit with a 13-0 run to start the second half, then fended off several Bard rally attempts to take an 82-72 victory on Thursday night.
The Raptors (1-20 overall, 1-15 Skyline) shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and had a 30-26 lead. But Mount St. Vincent (15-8, 10-8 Skyline) stormed out the locker room in the second half and built a 10-point lead with just four minutes gone. The second half effort by the Dolphins was punctuated with a couple of dunks and four blocked shots.
Bard cut the lead to six with 10:48 left, but then the Dolphins built it up to 14. Bard fought back again, cutting the lead to five with 5:40 left after a reverse layup from sophomore
Jeremy Arnstein (Washington, DC), but again, Mount St. Vincent responded.
Senior guard Dino Johnson (Fort Johnson, NY) was a real problem for Bard, because he scored 25 of his game-high 28 points in the second half. After Bard cut it to five, Johnson scored 15 of the Dolphins' 21 points the rest of the way, keeping Bard at bay. When he hit a foul shot with 52 seconds left, he scored his 1000th career point.
Bard's frequent rallies were squelched three times on unusual offensive possessions for Mount St. Vincent. They had two five-point possessions after flagrant fouls, and one four-point possession after a three-point shooter was fouled. Bard never got closer than five in the final minutes.
Four other Mount St. Vincent players finished in double figures, led by freshman Maxxwell Faircloth (Bronx, NY), who had 17 points and 18 rebounds.
Bard was led by Marghella, who had 19 points and six rebounds. Junior
Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA) scored 13 points, Arnstein finished with 11, and sophomore
Frank Stortini (Red Hook, NY) had 12 rebounds, three points and five assists.
Bard hits the road Saturday for a game at Polytechnic Institute of NYU at 4 p.m.
