Golden goal lifts RIT past Bard, 2-1

Junior Cosie Andujar (15) celebrates her second goal of the season on Saturday.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Playing a man down finally caught up with the Bard College women's soccer team in overtime.

RIT freshman Sierra Kiss (Sauquoit, NY) scored off a rebound of her own shot in the 99th minute on Saturday, allowing the Tigers to escape with a 2-1 Liberty League victory over Bard.

In a way, it was fitting that Kiss scored the golden goal, because it was her breakaway speed in the 79th minute that prompted Bard defender Perry Scheetz to bring her down. That foul drew a red card, and Bard played the rest of the game a man down.

Until that point, the game had been evenly played. RIT's Rachael Bromson (Suffield, CT) gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead just 1:52 into the game, but Bard carried possession and play throughout the rest of the first half. The Raptors were winning the battle at midfield, and it paid off in the 23rd minute, when junior Cosie Andujar forced a turnover just outside the penalty area, then turned a struck a one-timer without even looking at the goal.

The looping shot bent toward the far post and just past the outstretched hands of RIT keeper Ashley Valenti (Honeoye Falls, NY), making it 1-1. The Raptors outshot RIT 6-3 in the first half and entered the second half with confidence and energy.

Problem was, so did RIT. In fact, the Tigers took over, changing the momentum of the game by taking charge at midfield and eliminating any offensive opportunities for Bard. The Tigers outshot Bard, 7-0, in the second half and collected six corners to Bard's one. Still, they couldn't get anything past Bard keeper Amy Strawbridge, who was decisive and aggressive all afternoon.

A long through ball played from the defensive third in the 79th minute created a foot race between Kiss and Bard defender Perry Scheetz. Scheetz ended up fouling Kiss just outside the penalty area and was issued a red card. Bard played a man down after that point, and Scheetz will have to sit out Bard's next game.

In the overtime, RIT dominated. A high shot by Kiss from fisted down by Strawbridge, but Kiss pounced on the rebound and pushed it home in the 99th minute. The Tigers are 7-7 overall, 4-3 in the Liberty League.

Strawbridge made five saves for Bard, 3-10, 0-5 in the Liberty League. Next up for the Raptors is a home match against Vassar on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
