Thomas' big second half too much for Raptors

Frank Stortini scored 23 points to pace Bard on Sunday.
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team put together its best shooting perfomance of the season on Saturday afternoon - but got blown out by a team which shot the ball even better.

Thomas College broke open a five-point game with a 27-9 run in the middle of the second half en route to a 101-72 victory over Bard in the consolation game of the Hilton Garden Inn Tournament at Skidmore College.

The Terriers (2-4) went on a 12-4 run over the last five minutes of the first half to take a six-point halftime lead, but Bard (0-8) cut the lead to 56-51 with 13:58 left in the game. Thomas outscored Bard 45-21 the rest of the way, and the Raptors remain winless.

Bard shot 55 percent from the floor in the first half and 46 percent for the game, but Thomas made 16-of-29 three-pointers, including 12-of-15 in the second half. Sophomore guard Jarrad DeVaughn (Brockton, MA) led all scorers with 34 points and nine rebounds. He went 9-for-10 from beyond the three-point arc. Sophomore forward Francisco Alicea (Foxboro, MA) added 27 points.

For Bard, sophomore Frank Stortini (Red Hook, NY) led the way with 23 points; senior Christian Marghella (Closter, NJ) added 14, while junior Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA) and freshman Lamar Powell (Brooklyn, NY) contributed 12 points apiece. Powell also led the team with eight rebounds. Shubert was named to the All-Tournament team.

Bard hits the road on Wednesday for a Skyline Conference contest at Mount Saint Mary College at 8 p.m.
