Bard men lose a heartbreaker

Yonah Greenstein scored 15 of his 17 points against Yeshiva in the second half.
ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - The Bard College men's basketball team shook off another cold-shooting first half, turning a nine-point halftime deficit into a late second-half lead, before succumbing to Yeshiva University, 52-49, in the Raptors' home opener.

After shooting a dreadful 20 percent (5-for-25) from the field in the first half, Bard came out blazing in the second half and eventually took a 40-39 lead with 7:07 left in the game on a three-pointer by junior Yonah Greenstein (Rego Park, NY). The rally was driven by Bard's defense, which forced 13 Yeshiva turnovers in the second half alone.

Offensively, it was Greenstein who stepped up, making 3-of-4 from beyond the arc and scoring 15 of his game-high 17 points in the second half.

With the score tied 46-46 with 2:57 to play, the Raptors committed turnovers on consecutive possessions and fell behind, 50-46.

It was 51-46 when junior Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA) made a desperation three-pointer with two seconds left. Yeshiva's Dovie Hoffman (Tarzana, CA) made 1-of-2 foul shots, giving Bard one more chance with 1.2 seconds left, but the Raptors turned it over and never got a shot off.

Hoffman led Yeshiva (1-1 Skyline, 1-4 overall) with 20 points and 13 rebounds.

Shubert finished with 12 points for Bard, while senior Christian Marghella (Closter, NJ) added eight. Sophomore Frank Stortini (Red Hook, NY) contributed five points and nine rebounds.

Bard, 0-1 in the Skyline Conference and 0-4 overall, will next host SUNY Maritime on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
