RECAP: Women’s Soccer Ties Rutgers-Newark 1-1

Egrestis with the lone goal; LaFond with three saves

The Bard College women's soccer team came away with a tie on Sunday afternoon against the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders at Frederick Douglass Field.

Bard was on the front foot early with a shot from Brooke Egrestis. Rutgers-Newark had its only goal shortly after, at the 2:20 mark. Egrestis had a shot on goal to the lower left of the net in the 11th minute, but it was saved. Mahlia Slaiby followed it up with a shot that was saved at the 22:17 mark. Bard generated another scoring opportunity with a corner at the 29:00 mark, and Egrestis paid it off with a goal from just outside the 18 to the top left of the net.

In the second half, the teams exchanged possession in the attacking third, but neither could break through. Slaiby had an attempt on goal 5:19 into the half. Julianna LaFond made a save in the 65th minute that proved crucial. Another Bard flurry followed, as Slaiby took two shots in a span of 52 seconds, both saved in the center of the goal. LaFond was tested at the 76:03 mark and the 77:18 mark, holding strong again.

LaFond picked up three saves, while Camila Sandaal, Kaia Brady, Alexandria Loner, Natalie Wing, and Goldie Siff all recorded 90 minutes.

Bard plays SUNY Poly on the road at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
