ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Fluid offense and staunch defense were key to the Bard women's soccer team's defeat of the Kean Jersey City Cougars, 3-0, on Tuesday evening in the Raptors' home and season opener at Ferrari Soccer & Lacrosse Complex.

Bard started strong with two shots on goal within the first few minutes of play. At the 21:31 mark, the Raptors had a breakthrough, as Mahlia Slaiby navigated through the right side of the Cougar defense, split two defenders with a pass to Egrestis, who sent a blistering shot to the top of the net. Kean had an immediate counter-attack after the kickoff, but the Bard defense responded well. Thayden Hamilton-Howard was tested in goal with three first-half saves. 

Bard had their first shot on goal in the first few minutes of the second half, and it was a sign of things to come. It was a short wait for a Raptor celebration, as at the 57:19 mark, the Raptors broke through the Kean defense. Egrestis and Georgia McCauley assisted Carmen Merrick on her first collegiate goal. The Raptors took a 3-0 lead when a string of passes ended with Melania Hracs sending a horizontal ball to Nikki Magnozzi for Bard's third score. It was the first time since Claire Dickson in 2021 that a Raptor had scored goals in back-to-back season openers. The Raptors were solid on defense the rest of the game, holding strong against three Cougar shots in the second half. Julianna LaFond relieved Hamilton-Howard in goal for the second half. The back line did well making adjustments and handling pressure when it came from Kean. 

Egrestis, Julia Skoufalos, LaFond, Carmen Merrick, and Stephanie Rojas Tlatilolpa all got their first collegiate minutes in the victory.

Bard faces Kean in a neutral-site contest at Rutgers-Newark at 4 p.m. on Friday.
