RECAP: Baseball splits doubleheader with Vassar; gets crucial Game 1 win

The Bard College baseball team took down Vassar in Game 1 of the doubleheader to secure the series win, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers won the second game 20-3 in seven innings.

Lachlan Rudd led the team in Game 1, going 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. A pair of hits came from Jack Leandri, Sergio Hormazabal, Xavier Webb and Andrew Plenn. Kane Morgan was phenomenal on the mound, tying his career-high nine strikeouts in 8.0 innings of work, while Aidan Kiefer got the save after coming in on the bottom of the ninth.

In Game 2, the Raptors had a pair of singles from Angus Lunt-Woodward, Webb, Fryer, Hormazabal, and Plenn. Graham Benway started on the mound and had five Raptors come in as relief pitchers. Henry Hubner, Elise Berger, and Tom Maxwell each had a strikeout.

Bard will travel to Manhattanville on Tuesday for a single game at 3:30 p.m.

Game 1: Bard 4, Vassar 2

Bard broke through first in the top of the third. Webb singled and came around to score when Rudd singled to second base, giving the Raptors a 1-0 lead. From there, the offense was limited, with Bard managing just six hits in the game, but the Raptors stayed within striking distance thanks to their work on the mound and in key defensive moments.

Vassar finally answered in the seventh inning and tied the game at 1-1. The Brewers then moved in front in the eighth after Noah Townsend reached and later scored on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Jack Biskupiak. It gave Vassar a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth, putting Bard down to its final three outs.

The Raptors responded with resilience at the top of the ninth. Rudd scored the tying run when Lunt-Woodward reached on a fielding error by the Vassar shortstop, allowing Bard to even the score at 2-2. Moments later, Sergio Hormazabal came through with a clutch pinch-hit single to right center, bringing home Leandri and pushing Bard back in front, 3-2.

Bard then added an important insurance run when Webb lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Rivlin for a 4-2 advantage.

With the lead in hand, Kiefer closed the door in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first save of the season. He allowed no hits and no runs over the final inning, striking out one. Bard finished with four runs on six hits, while Vassar scored two runs on four hits.

Game 2: Vassar 20, Bard 3 (7 inn)

The Brewers jumped out to an early lead with six runs in the first inning and continued to build momentum throughout the game. Bard scored twice in the second inning and added another run in the third, but Vassar responded with multiple big innings, including a seven-run sixth, to pull away in the seven-inning contest.
