RECAP: Baseball Splits Double Header; Wins Against Skidmore for First Time Since 2023

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y.
The Bard College baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with the Skidmore Thoroughbreds, falling 12-3 in Game 1 but securing a 7-6 thriller in Game 2 at Honey Field.

Elias Grosfoguel and Jack Leandri led the team going 3-of-5 on the day. Grosfoguel had a triple, while Leandri had an RBI-double. Xavier Webb had three hits and an RBI on the day, while Angus Lunt-Woodward knocked in one and singled twice. Jeremy Hall had a base hit, a walk and an RBI.

Lachlan Rudd had four runs, a single, two RBIs, two walks, and three stolen bases. Charlie Beauregard had a single, a double, a walk, and two stolen bases. Jamie Fryer played first base in game one and had a double. Sergio Hormazabal was at third and had a double and an RBI in game two, while Andrew Plenn went 2-for-4 with a triple in game two.

Next up is a Wednesday game at 3:30 p.m. against Plymouth State for a non-conference game, followed by a single game against Mount Saint Mary on Thursday.

Game 1: Bard 3, Skidmore 12

Charles Lehr started, going 4.0 innings with three hits allowed and four strikeouts. Skidmore went up 4-0 during the top of the third before Bard answered in the bottom of the inning with a Leandri RBI double.

Skidmore was held scoreless in the fourth before tacking on two more runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings. The score remained at 8-1 for the late innings, until a big ninth inning in which the Thoroughbreds plated four. Bard was able to score twice in the bottom of the ninth to generate some momentum heading into game two.

Jackson Sprinzen finished with 2.0 innings of work with a strikeout, while William Oakley had a strikeout in 3.0 innings.

Game 2: Bard 7, Skidmore 6

Graham Benway was able to handle the Skidmore pressure at the top of the first, and Plenn caught a Thoroughbred stealing to aid in the effort. Bard capitalized on a pair of walks to lead off the bottom of the first, as Rudd scored on a wild pitch.

Benway settled down in the second for a 1-2-3 inning. This freed up the Raptors' bats to explode for three runs in the bottom of the second. It began with a Plenn triple and a Hall sac fly. Beauregard and Rudd got on base and quickly made their way around the bases, with Webb knocking in Rudd on a 3-2 count.

Skidmore's response was a 4-run top of the third, which was supplemented by a 1-2-3 bottom of the third to keep Bard in check. Benway pitched well for a 1-2-3 fourth, and Skidmore went punch for punch with a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning. Benway continued to deal in the fifth, and the Raptors' offense threatened to score in the bottom half of the inning, with two runners on.

Aidan Kiefer relieved Benway, who went 5.0 innings with no earned runs, allowing a 0.158 average. The sixth went by scoreless, but Skidmore broke the tie in the top of the seventh, not to be outdone by two runs from Bard immediately off an RBI single by Lunt-Woodward and an RBI double by Hormazabal.

Kiefer got through a testy eighth inning with two runners on base, keeping the lead. Rudd was credited with an RBI in the bottom of the eighth for a crucial insurance run. After Skidmore made it 6-7 with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, with two runners on base, Bard called upon Tom Maxwell for the final out and the save. Kiefer got the win, striking out four in 3.2 innings.
