ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team powered its way to a 19-14 victory over Plymouth State on Wednesday afternoon at Honey Field, highlighted by a record-tying performance from
Jamie Fryer and a historic start from
Elise Berger. Today's game was dedicated to Morgan's Message.
Fryer delivered a career day at the plate, tying Bard's single-game program record with six RBI while also matching the program mark with two home runs in a game. His two home runs at Honey Field is a first by a Raptor. Fryer also tied for second for the most runs scored in a game with four. Fryer also did not strike out on the day. The big offensive day helped fuel a Raptors lineup that scored in seven different innings and finished with 19 runs on 15 hits.
Jack Leandri, Angus Lunt-Woodward, Fryer and Andrew Plenn all had multiple hits, with Lunt-Woodward and Fryer tied up with three hits. Elias Grosfoguel had two at-bats and drove in three runs before Lunt-Woodward subbed in and went 3-for-3 on the day as the designated hitter. Plenn and Sergio Hormazabal each ended the day with two RBIs. Lunt-Woodward, Leandri, Jack Rivlin, and Lachlan Rudd all had three runs scored.
Before the offensive fireworks began, Berger made program history as the first female starting pitcher in Bard baseball history. The sophomore worked three innings and earned the win, allowing three runs (two earned) while helping the Raptors secure the victory.
Bard used multiple pitchers as relief. Tom Maxwell and Graham Williams each threw an inning, with Williams striking out two batters, while Maxwell allowed only one hit. Emmett O'Brien faced three batters before retiring and bringing in Henry Hubner. Hubner threw 1.1 innings and had a strikeout.
Dylan Conte came in at the top of the 7th in a bases-loaded situation and struck out the batter. Conte threw 1.1 innings with two strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Micah Liu came in as relief for Conte after Conte faced one batter in the top of the ninth. Liu's appearance is his first collegiate appearance on the mound; he had two back-to-back outs before the Panthers scored two runs.
Bard will be back tomorrow for another non-conference match-up against Mount Saint Mary (NY) with a 3:30 first pitch, the game was originally scheduled to be at Mount Saint Mary.
Bard 19, Plymouth St. 14
Plymouth State struck first with a run in the top of the opening inning, but Bard answered quickly in the bottom half with four runs. Xavier Webb walked to start the inning, and Rivlin drove in Bard's first run with an RBI single. Grosfoguel followed with a sacrifice fly to give the Raptors the lead before Fryer launched a two-run home run to left field, putting Bard ahead 4-1 after one.
After the Panthers trimmed the deficit in the third inning, Bard responded with its biggest offensive frame of the day. Grosfoguel sparked the rally with a two-run double, bringing home Leandri and Rivlin. Plenn added a two-run single to extend the lead, while a wild pitch and an RBI single from Webb capped the six-run inning as Bard stretched its advantage to 10-3.
Plymouth State continued to battle back and cut the lead to 10-6 in the fourth, but Bard answered once again. Fryer drove in Lunt-Woodward with an RBI double before Hormazabal followed with a two-run double, pushing the Raptors' lead to 13-6.
The Panthers put together a four-run fifth inning to make it a three-run game, but Bard quickly regained momentum in the bottom half. Lunt-Woodward doubled home Leandri to start the rally, and Fryer delivered the biggest swing of the afternoon — a three-run home run to left field — giving him six RBI on the day and extending Bard's lead to 17-10.
Bard added two more runs in the seventh inning when Rudd tripled to drive in Lunt-Woodward and later came around to score on a wild pitch, escaping the catcher's tag by jumping over him and pirouetting his way to touch the plate.
Plymouth State scored twice in the seventh and twice in the ninth, but Bard's offense proved too much to overcome as the Raptors secured the 19-14 victory.
