RECAP: Baseball Racks Up Program Record 23 Runs, Sweeps Alfred

WINTER HAVEN, FL — The Bard College baseball team earned two dominant victories and scored a program-record 23 runs in Game 2, on Saturday in their first game in Florida. Bard defeated Alfred 16-3 in Game 1, and 23-8 in Game 2.

Elias Grosfoguel had a stellar day, going 6-of-7 with three walks, scoring seven runs, hitting three doubles, a triple, and racking up seven RBIs. Lachlan Rudd's inside-the-park home run was part of the highlight of the day, as he delivered a 3-for-5 evening with two walks, three runs, and three RBIs. Jack Leandri went 4-of-7 with two walks, scoring seven runs and driving in four.

Jeremy Hall had a five-RBI game in Game 2, going 2-for-5 with two runs and a triple. Angus Lunt-Woodward raked, extending his hitting streak to five, going 6-of-9 with two doubles, five RBIs, and six runs. Jamie Fryer went 2-for-3 in Game 2, driving in three and crossing the plate three times. Xavier Webb added to the hit parade with a 4-of-8 day, hitting a double, scoring three runs, and notching an RBI.

Kane Morgan started Game 1, striking out a career-high nine batters in 5.0 innings pitched. He only allowed two earned runs and got his second win of the season. Graham Williams started on the mound in Game 2, going 3.0 innings and striking out two. He allowed three hits, pitched well enough to keep the Raptors' lead wire-to-wire and recorded his first career win.

Elise Berger followed, with 2.1 innings of one-hit ball and no earned runs. She had three strikeouts across the middle innings. Jackson Sprinzen recorded the final five outs without allowing a hit, breezing through the end of the game.

The Raptors will be back tomorrow for a doubleheader against UMaine-Farmington with the first pitch at 4:45 PM.

Game 1: Bard 16, Alfred 3

Morgan started strong on the mound, going 1-2-3 with all of them from a strikeout. Bard delivered in the bottom of the first with two runs, as lead off batter Webb doubled to left field and stole a base. Leandri hit an RBI single to center field to take a 1-0 lead. Hormazabal drew a walk, but the fourth ball was a wild pitch, which Leandri took the opportunity to go home.

In the bottom of the second, Bard brought home another run with a sac fly RBI from Rivlin. Alfred scored a run in the top of the third, but Bard responded in the bottom of the third, with a sac fly RBI by Hormazabal and an inside-the-park home run by Rudd to make it 6-1. The last inside-the-park home run was from Rory Maglich in 2019. The Raptors added one in the fourth with a Leandri RBI single. Alfred cut it to four in the fifth inning, 3-7, but the Raptors' bats broke out in the bottom half, as a pair of walks plus an Alfred error to start the inning spelled trouble for the Saxons. Rivlin, Leandri, Lunt-Woodward, Burcell, Grosfoguel, and Rudd all had RBIs in the nine-run inning. After that outburst, the rain caused the game to end prior to the sixth.

Game 2: Bard 23, Alfred 8

A huge first inning carried the Raptors to a dominant victory in game two. The Raptors batted around and scored eight runs, including three from a Hall triple with the bases loaded. Williams got out of the bottom of the first with minimal damage, stranding two runners. Bard would find itself in a little trouble in the third, with Alfred driving through three runs to make it 8-4.

The offense seized back control in the fourth, with a four-run inning. The big hit was Grosfoguel's two-RBI double to drive in Lunt-Woodward and Leandri. After Bard baserunners capitalized on a couple of wild pitches in the fifth, the score was 14-4. The Saxons battled back in the sixth, making it 14-8 after a four-run display. However, the Raptors attacked Alfred pitching early in counts in the seventh, with just three of the 13 plate appearances lasting longer than four pitches. The nine-run inning gave Bard its record 23rd run, and the Raptors finalized the nearly four-hour game.

The previous highest total for runs by Bard in a game was 22 back on April 10, 2016 against St. Lawrence.
