RECAP: Baseball drops home opener doubleheader to Bates

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team fought hard in its home opener doubleheader against Bates, showcasing a promising season ahead. The Raptors fell 14-7 in Game 1 of a 7-inning game, and 17-3 in Game 2 of a 9-inning game on Saturday at Honey Field.

Xavier Webb and Jack Leandri led the team, going 4-for-6 at the plate (.667) and having two runs each. Leandri had three doubles on the day, on top of two RBIs. Angus Lunt-Woodward went .500 with three hits and a team-high three RBIs. Sergio Hormazabal had two hits and a run in Game 2.

Andrew Plenn, Jack Burcell, Lachlan Rudd, Charlie Beauregard, Jack Rivlin and Rob DeBello each had one hit, with Plenn, Rudd, Rivlin, and DeBello each bringing home a run.

On the mound, Charles Lehr started Game 1, while Kane Morgan started Game 2. Graham Williams, William Oakley, and Ryan Lora had their first collegiate appearance on the mound as Raptors.

Bard will host CCNY next Sunday, March 8, for a doubleheader with the first pitch at noon.

Game 1: Bates 14, Bard 7

Bates struck first at the top of the first inning with three runs. The Bobcats did have three games under their belt before coming down to play Bard, while Bard had been practicing inside due to the weather. The Bobcats extended their lead to eight runs midway through the game.

The Raptors finally broke the scoring deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. A two-out, two RBI single to right field by Lunt-Woodward drove Leandri and Rivlin home. In the bottom of the seventh, Bard was on a comeback with Webb getting on base with a hit by pitch and stealing a base to get in scoring position. A single by Plenn through the right side drove Webb home, and Rivlin's single to center field drove Plenn home to make it 14-4.

Leandri hit an RBI double to left field, to bring Rudd home, while Lunt-Woodward came in clutch and brought home Rivlin to make it 14-6. A groundout RBI by DeBello put the deficit to just seven. Bates got the third out and the win with a fly out.

Lehr threw 3.0 innings with four strikeouts. Williams and Henry Hubner came in as relief pitchers, with Williams throwing 1.2 innings and striking out two batters, while Hubner threw 2.1 innings with three strikeouts.

Game 2: Bates 17, Bard 3

Similar to the first game, Bates scored early. Bard, however, stayed within reach, scoring in the bottom of the first off an RBI single by Leandri. The Bobcats added six more runs to make it 9-1. Webb drove home a run in the bottom of the third to make it 9-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bard had three consecutive hits to load the bases. Rudd's RBI single brought home a run to reduce the deficit, but the Raptors were unable to create any damage after the fact.

Aidan Kiefer, Jackson Sprinzen, Dylan Conte and Nikhil Newman each had two strikeouts, while Orlando Shin had a strikeout.
