RECAP: Women’s Tennis Earns First Victory At Western Connecticut

Maria Castro wins all 18 games at No. 1 singles and doubles

The Bard College women's tennis team defeated the Western Connecticut Wolves on Monday. The Raptors have won eight of the last ten meetings with the Wolves.

Bard came away with the doubles point, as at No. 1 doubles, Maria Castro/Paige Houghton won without dropping a game, taking back-to-back victories at the top doubles position to begin the season. At No. 2 doubles, Patricia Santos and Natalie Lagunes kept up the Raptors' momentum, taking a clinching tiebreak 7-6 (7-1). Lisa Kyrtoka and Sienna Roveda played their first doubles match of the year at No. 3 doubles.

Castro continued her poised play, wrapping up her match 6-0 6-0 at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, Houghton won her first singles match of the season. Lagunes also got in the win column at No. 3 singles, 6-2 6-0 in her first singles victory of her collegiate career.

Santos forced a tiebreak her Western Connecticut opponent in the No. 4 singles position. At No. 5 singles, Catherine Chapel moved to 2-0 with a straight sets showing that clinched the match for Bard. At No. 6, Jesse Radzik also cleaned up shop, besting her opponent.

The Raptors are slated to start its Liberty League schedule tomorrow, when they host Union for their home opener at 6 p.m.
