ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. — The Bard men's tennis team was defeated by the Purchase Panthers on Thursday afternoon.
Bard's lone victory came at No. 3 doubles, as
Augustin Johnson and
Ciaran Chamberlain cruised to a 6-0 win. They faced deuce in the first game, but never looked back after taking the deciding point. At No. 1 doubles,
Thanasis Kostikas and
Faisal Jones partnered up in their tenth match of the season and 13th overall.
Yashar Khan and
George Miahkov were nearly able to clinch the doubles point, but the Panthers broke at 4-5 down and won the final three games of the set.
Jones was entrenched in a lefty-versus-lefty matchup at No. 1 singles, but was only able to take one game in the first set. At No. 2 singles, Kostikas took the first set, but fell short of the match in a third set 10-point tiebreak. Solid groundstrokes got him in position to win, but a few points went the other way.
At No. 3 singles, Khan made his seventh appearance this season, trying to induce errors from his opponent. He could not wear Purchase down, however, despite a close second set. Miahkov played at No. 4 singles and was relentless, approaching the net at any opportunity. The Panthers' well-placed lobs were able to stifle the attack.
At No. 5 singles, Johnson was on serve with Purchase until they got broken at 4-all. Johnson broke back to stay in the set, but couldn't come through. The Panthers held on for the second set, as Johnson's forehand at match point went wide.
Chamberlain gritted at No. 6 singles, coming back from 0-3 down in the first set to win it. He faced a similar deficit in the second set, 0-4, forcing a tiebreaker but dropping the set. Purchase continued its momentum in the final set tiebreaker to finish the comeback.
The Raptors have an opportunity to rebound tomorrow against RIT at 3 p.m. at their home facility.
