RECAP: Men’s Volleyball Splits Tri-Match against VTSU-Johnson and Emmanuel (MA)

Stein has 20 kills against VTSU-Johnson

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. --- The Bard College men's volleyball team defeated NEVC foe VTSU-Johnson Badgers before falling to the Emmanuel Saints on Saturday afternoon.

Sidney Stein was a high-volume pin hitter, accumulating a game-high 20 kills on 42 attacks, in addition to three aces and six digs. Ansel Waisler was the most efficient Raptor with multiple attacks, hitting .433 and scoring 16 kills. He led all players with four aces and added a team-high nine digs. Pearce Esposito had 26 assists, seven kills, and four digs in the match. Quincy Ross had over a block per set, tallying five to lead Bard. Georgi Chikolov played an important role, with 11 assists, seven digs, and two aces.

The Badgers got out to a 7-2 start in the first match of the day, and the Raptors responded, going on a 9-1 run. With a three-point lead at 13-10, Bard won eight of the next nine points to take a double-digit lead, which they carried to the finish line. Ross had two blocks, Chikolov had a pair of digs, and four different Raptors hit aces in the set.

The Raptors one-upped themselves in the second set, taking it by an 11-point margin. They had an early 5-1 run to give them a 9-4 edge. Then, to close the set, Bard took six straight points, five of which came on Chikolov's serve. It was as clean as you could imagine, as the Raptors had 14 kills and no errors, hitting .636 to the Badgers' .208. The last time the Raptors had 14 or more kills and no errors in a set was against Lesley in 2023.

Bard did not hit an error until the eighth point of the third set, a stretch of 51 straight points that went back to the final five points of the opening set. The Raptors began the third set up 4-0, but  VTSU-Johnson stepped on the gas pedal, winning five straight points. At 11-11, the Badgers had a 6-0 run. The Raptors matched the intensity and had a 7-1 run to tie the score at 18-18. However,  VTSU-Johnson won seven of the final nine points of the set to stay alive in the match.

With a 2-1 set lead, the Raptors looked to Stein. He delivered at 12-11, when he had an individual 7-1 run with four kills and three aces. Bard could taste victory at 21-13 when the Badgers called their final timeout. VTSU-Johnson cut the lead to six at 17-23, but the Raptors sealed the match on an ace from Gideon Jacob

Against Emmanuel, Waisler had a team-high 13 kills and three aces. Defensively, he contributed five digs. Stein joined him in double figures, with 11 kills and a team-high six digs. Esposito had seven kills, five assists, and four digs in the match. Jacob had a team-high 11 assists, adding four digs. Chikolov had nine assists and a dig to round out the main contributors.

The Raptors found themselves in another early deficit, but at 10-14, they went on a 5-1 run to tie the set up. However, the Saints went on a 6-0 run to answer, winning the set while holding a slim 10-9 advantage in kills.

In the early going of the second set, both teams had short spurts, as the Saints went up 4-0 followed by a 6-2 run by the Raptors. Bard took its first lead in the set at 15-14 after a slew of attacks from Stein. It was up for grabs, and the Saints took the nailbiter despite 14 kills from Bard.

Emmanuel went on a 5-1 run to start the final set. At 7-4, the Saints had another 5-1 run, forcing a timeout from Bard. The Raptors were down 8-18, but played freely, going on a 10-4 run to get within four. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as the Saints took the match in three sets.

Bard continues its longest homestand of the season against Drew on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Stevenson Athletic Center.
