RECAP: Baseball drops doubleheader to William Paterson

DAVENPORT, FL – The Bard College baseball team had a tough battle against William Paterson, as the Raptors fell 8-2 in Game 1 and 20-3 in Game 2 to conclude their spring break games in Florida.

Bard had eight different players who recorded a hit in the doubleheader. Jack Burcell led the team in Game 1, going 2-for-3 with a run. James Karras, Jamie Fryer and Elias Grosfoguel each had a hit, with Karras adding two RBIs.

Game 1 was a battle of pitchers, with a low-scoring game of 3-2. It wasn't until the bottom of the fifth that William Paterson added two insurance runs to take a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth inning, and an additional three runs in the bottom of the sixth. Charlie Lehr started on the mound and only allowed three hits in 4.1 innings pitched. He was one strikeout away from tying his career-high six strikeouts. Nikhil Newman came in as a relief pitcher and threw 1.2 innings.

In Game 2, the Pioneers kept their offensive momentum going from Game 1 as they scored multiple runs in each inning except for the sixth. Bard kept fighting and scored a run in the bottom of the third off a ground-out RBI by Jimmy Famularo. The Raptors added two more runs in the next frame as Bard loaded the bases. Graham Marshall ripped a single through the left side to bring home a run, while, Mike Lynch reached base on a fielder's choice RBI.

Bard utilized five different pitchers for Game 2 with Graham Benway starting the game and throwing 2.0 innings. Evan Landsman and Tom Maxwell each pitched 1.1 innings with a strikeout. Kyle Palleschi had his first collegiate pitching appearance and threw one inning.

Bard will start their Liberty League campaign this Friday against RPI at 3:30 p.m.
