RECAP: Baseball drops two close contests to Salem State

Three Raptors blast a home run each in Game 1

AUBURNDALE, FL – The Bard College baseball team battled toe-to-toe with Salem State over 14 innings Sunday, but in the end dropped both games 8-7 to the Vikings at Lake Myers Field.

Bard took a 6-1 lead midway through Game 1, but Salem State was able to break through in the bottom of the seventh with a 2 RBI double to walk it off. In Game 2, Bard had a 5-1 lead heading to the top of the fourth but Salem State answered with back-to-back three run innings to take a 7-5 midway through the 5th. Bard had a chance to walk off the game with two runners on base in the seventh but was unable to squeeze the runs home.

Andrew Plenn and James Karras each hit their first collegiate home run, while Jimmy Famularo blasted his first solo home run of the season and second in his career, all in Game 1. Famularo went 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBIs and three runs during the twin bill.

Up next, the Raptors will take on William Paterson for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4 p.m. to conclude their spring break trip.

Game 1: Salem State 8, Bard 7

Bard opened the scoring in the top of the second with an RBI double by Jamie Fryer to left center to bring Gavin Gonzalez home, who got on base with a hit-by-pitch. Plenn blasted a two-run shot to left center on the first pitch to give Bard a 3-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third. Karras added insurance runs as he laced a rocket to left field for a 3-run home run and gave Bard a 6-0 lead.

The Vikings answered in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI groundout to get a run on the board. A two-run home run in the fifth closed the gap between the two teams. Salem State added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to get within one heading to the seventh. Famularo hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh to add an insurance run.

Salem State utilized two back-to-back errors by the Raptors to their advantage. The Vikings scored one off a wild pitch to make it 6-7. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Salem State and Aidan Lynch brought home the game-winning runners with a 2-run double to right field.

Bryant Elliott started on the mound and threw 6.0 innings with three strikeouts. Tom Maxwell and Graham Benway both came out of the bullpen in the seventh inning as a relief pitcher.

Game 2: Salem State 8, Bard 7

Salem State scored at the top of the first with an RBI single through the left side. The Raptors answered quickly as Famularo cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double to center field. Spencer Azzara added an RBI single to left field in the bottom of the second, while Famularo scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the third, to take a 5-1 lead.

Salem State scored three runs in the top of the fourth to get within one run and added three more runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Jeremy Hall singled to left field in the bottom of the fifth to get within one of the Vikings. SSU added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to go 8-6.

In the bottom of the seventh, Bard drew back-to-back walks to put two runners on base with no outs. However, Salem State called in their game 1 winning pitcher, Jake Boucher, who got two back-to-back strikeouts. Fryer singled to center field to keep the Raptors rally going, but a pop-up to first base ended the comeback.

Henry Hubner made his first collegiate start on the mound. Hubner allowed two hits and one earned run in 3.1 innings. Dylan Conte came in midway through the top of the fourth and threw 2.2 innings with two strikeouts. Orlando Shin came in as relief in the top of the seventh and struck out two batters with no hits.
