RECAP: Baseball drops season opener to Manhattanville

Elise Berger makes Raptor history as first female baseball player

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The Bard College baseball team dropped a thrilling doubleheader in their home and season opener against Manhattanville on Saturday at Honey Field. The Raptors dropped the first game 11-6 and game 2, 10-5.

Bard and Manhattanville combined for 30 hits and 32 runs in the doubleheader. The Raptors were led by Jeremy Hall, Xavier Webb, and James Karras with two hits, while Jimmy Famularo contributed with a team-high four RBIs.

In game 1, Bryant Elliott started the game, threw 4.0 innings, and had six strikeouts. Bard had three relief pitchers take the mound with Kane Morgan, Evan Landsman and a first collegiate appearance Dylan Conte. Morgan added a strikeout, while Conte had two strikeouts.

In game 2, Charlie Lehr started on the mound and threw three strikeouts in four innings pitched. Elise Berger came in relief for one inning and had her first strikeout. Berger became the first female baseball player to ever compete for Bard. Jackson Sprinzen also had his first collegiate mound appearance and he contributed with a strikeout in one inning of relief. Nikhil Newman threw three innings, allowing no hits, and added three strikeouts.

Game 1: Manhattanville 11, Bard 6

The Valiants took advantage of a first pitch hit by CJ Archul and took a 1-0 lead after one frame. The Raptors tied the game in the bottom of the third inning with an RBI ground out by Sam Dumper that brought home Cal Anna. With the momentum from the previous inning, Bard brought home two more runs. An RBI single by Mike Lynch brought home Andrew Plenn who singled up the middle. Lynch advanced to second base on the same play, then advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on the error thrown by the Valiants catcher.

Manhattanville regrouped and took advantage of the pitching change in the top of the fifth inning to score four runs and take a 5-3 lead. The lead was short-lived as Bard tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth with two runs, thanks to a sac fly by Dumper and a passed ball.

The Valiants added six runs in the next inning and gave them an 11-5 lead. Bard had a chance to get some runs in the bottom of the seventh inning with two runners on base and one out. The Raptors scored one run off a sac fly from Famularo but was unable to complete the comeback.

Game 2: Manhattanville, 10, Bard 5

Manhattanville took an early 3-0 lead, but the Raptors were within range as Rob Debello had his first collegiate appearance and hit with an RBI triple to make it 3-1 after two frames. The Valiants added seven runs in the next three innings to lead 9-1 heading to the bottom of the sixth. Bard answered in the bottom of the sixth with four runs. With two outs and the bases loaded, Hall ripped a single to left field to bring one runner home. Famularo would clear the bases with a double to right center to get the Raptors within four heading to the seventh inning.

The Valiants added one run in the top of the seventh to make it 10-5 and held the Raptors to no hits the rest of the way to take the victory.

Bard will head to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to take on Muhlenberg in a three-game series next week. The game will be hosted at the Clipper Magazine Stadium while Muhlenberg finishes its baseball field construction.
