RECAP: Men’s Basketball Falls Short in Tight Finish at New Paltz

Tovar and Frei with a career-high night

T
he Bard College men's basketball team could not withstand a late New Paltz surge, falling 76-73 on Saturday night at the Hawk Center.

Bard controlled long stretches behind standout performances from Lucas Tovar, who posted a career-high 27 points and a near double-double with nine rebounds and four steals. Max Frei had his first career double-double with a career-high night of 19 points and 11 rebounds. Tovar and Frei's production helped Bard flip a three-point halftime advantage into a 62–49 lead with 10:17 remaining.

New Paltz fought its way back and rallied with an 18-6 run to get within two points of Bard with less than 4:37 to go. Tovar briefly steadied Bard with a layup and free throw to push the Raptors ahead 71–68, but New Paltz answered again. A tip-in made by the Hawks with two minutes left to go gave New Paltz its first lead of the half.

The Raptors had a chance down the stretch to pull the win as Seth Dyer scored inside to pull the Raptors within 73–74 with 40 seconds left, and Bard came up with a stop on the next possession. However, a missed one-and-one opportunity by Bard allowed New Paltz to secure the rebound and convert two free throws with four seconds remaining and seal the win.

Bard shot 41 percent from the field and 8-for-20 from three, while New Paltz overcame its early struggles by turning 19 offensive rebounds into 21 second-chance points.

The Raptors will start conference play after the Thanksgiving break and will face Hobart on December 5th at 7:30 p.m. for their Morgan's Message theme game.
