ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. –The Bard College men's basketball team was defeated by Hobart, 77-68, on Friday during their home conference opener and Morgan's Message night at Stevenson Athletic Center.
Angelos Bratakos and
Seth Dyer led the charge against Hobart with 11 points and three rebounds each. Bratakos and Dyer both went 3-for-5 from the three-point line.
Lucas Tovar and
Azikiwe Cuffy-Scott both followed behind with 10 points each. Tovar had two steals and four rebounds, while Cuffy-Scott made both of his free throws, grabbed three rebounds, and blocked two shots.
Sam Gibbs had his first collegiate appearance and scored nine points, grabbed a rebound, and dished out an assist.
Jalen Umstead tied his career high of three assists and grabbed a team-high of eight rebounds with
Max Frei. Frei added five points and two assists.
Bard led for the first five minutes, 12-7, with the Statesmen trying to feel their rhythm behind the arc. At 17-17, Hobart took charge and went on a 29-12 run with less than four minutes to go. The Raptors got within seven points at 3:51, but the Statesmen went on an 8-2 run to take a 13-point lead by halftime. The Raptors outshot Hobart 50-44.44% from the field in the first half.
In the second half, the Raptors became more selective with their shooting, allowing Hobart to go on a 6-0 run within the first four minutes. The Raptors went 100% on free throws and towered over Hobart in shooting percentage, 46.43% in comparison to Hobart's 39.39% from the field. However, it was the 24 turnovers (11 in the second half) that helped the Statesmen score 16 points.
Bard will be back tomorrow to take on RIT at 4 p.m. at Stevenson Athletic Center.
