RECAP: Men’s Basketball falls short of a comeback at Union

The Bard College men's basketball team dropped a thrilling Liberty League matchup on Tuesday evening at Union, 63-62.

Lazaros Panagiotounis led the team with his eighth 20+ point game with 23. He added four rebounds and an assist. Sean Wilcox was the other Raptor in double-digit points with 11, adding six rebounds and three blocks. Azriel Almodovar grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds, four steals, two assists and eight points. Max Frei shot 3-of-5 from the field with seven points and two assists.

The Raptors had a slow start in the first half, unable to find their shooting from behind the arc. Union got an early start, going 12-2 up after seven minutes of play. Bard went on a 9-3 run to get within four points of the Garnet Chargers. Union took advantage of their 3-point shots falling as they shot 7-of-15 from behind the arc.

After halftime, Bard changed gears and fought back as they went on a 14-9 run to get within seven points of Union. With eight minutes left, back-to-back layups from Almodovar and Panagiotounis and a three-pointer from Ahmad Rauf got Bard within two of the Garnet Chargers. The Raptors took the lead for a split second after a floater jump shot from Almodovar with less than five minutes to make it 56-55, but Union answered back with a layup and two made free-throws to extend the lead back to three.

With less than a minute left, Union took a four-point lead after a jumper from Tanner Tedesco. Wilcox answered with a three-pointer to get within one with less than 40 seconds left. With four seconds left, Bard had a chance to win the game, but the ball rattled in and out of the basket. Bard shot better than Union, shooting 45.2% from the field and 33.3% from behind the arc, in comparison to Union's 40.3% from the field and 0-for-12 from behind the arc.

Bard looks to bounce back from the game as it travels to the northern countries. They will take on Clarkson on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and St. Lawrence on Saturday at 4 p.m.
