RECAP: Women’s Tennis Shorthanded, Takes a Loss at Union

Young Raptors Gain Early Liberty League Experience

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. — The Bard Women's Tennis team (1-1, 0-1) traveled to Union College (1-0, 1-0) on Wednesday with the minimum four players.

Bard was able to stay in games, pushing Union to deuce with their defensive play.

At No. 1 doubles, Paige Houghton/Lisa Kyrtoka lost 6-0 to Samantha Jacobs/Paige Tromblee. The Bard team was almost able to hold serve, but the aggressive returning style and net play prevented that.

At No. 2 doubles, Calista Finkelstein/Scarlet Carrara won over the Raptors' pair of first years Jesse Radzik and Malaya Zabala-Cornejo, 6-0. Bard's youngsters showed flashes of potential, with return winners that found the corner of the court.

The Raptors had to forfeit No. 3 doubles, as well as No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

Houghton was elevated to the No. 1 singles spot, where she faced Union's Skylar Semon. Union's top singles player kept Houghton back on the baseline, eventually taking the match 6-0 6-0.

Zabala-Cornejo moved up to No. 2 singles to play Claire Langille, competing in both sets and winning two games in the second set. The Raptor first year was able to endure the pace from Langille, but wasn't able to turn it around over the entire match.

At No. 3 singles, Jesse Radzik faced Paige Tromblee, losing 6-0 6-0. Bard's newcomer was able to gain traction on many points. Due to this, the match was the last to finish despite the scoreline.

At No. 4 singles, Lisa Kyrtoka took a game against Scarlet Carrara in the first set, withstanding Carrara's serve. However, the match went to Union, 6-1 6-0.

The Raptors are hoping to be at full strength for their next match on Wednesday, September 18th, their home opener against Western Connecticut at 8 p.m.
